Reel Bad Arabs

What immediately struck me was the mention of Arabic women often times being more than the Arabic men in universities. This reminded me of my Arabic friend and how he said that the women’s side of the university campus was much bigger than the men’s side. I was also shocked by how graphic some of the practices were and how so many men were tortured like that. Seeing them bloody and beaten on the ground while they cried in pain was really sad. I also was shocked by the scene where the Arab girl has her gun pointed to the soldiers and was shooting too. It was extremely disheartening to see how she was made so inhumane, and Hollywood portrayed an innocent, handicapped girl as someone of evil and threat to the entire US army. I can never agree with the US army actually killing not only the men and women, but to go so far as to massacre the little children. I think showing that the US army was morally right and it was a necessary evil is a disgusting thing to do by Hollywood and I’m appalled it was even allowed to play on a big screen. Apart from what I don’t really have anything else to say except for how I agreed with Mr. Jack on most points, and I think that he made a very detailed analysis on the portrayal of Arabis in media history. Hopefully what he said in the end was true, and more people will come forward with humanising Arabs and making sure they aren’t portrayed like this anymore.

I think you make a really good point about how the creators of the film really un-humanized the handicapped girl with the gun. It’s disappointing how they took a seemingly innocent young girl and turned her into a villainous character just to demonstrate how barbaric and violent Arab society is.
